Income-tax notices · 143(1) · 139(9) · 148

Got a tax notice from India? Don't panic — respond right.

A notice from the Income-Tax Department can look alarming, but most are routine — a mismatch, a missed disclosure, a high-value transaction flag. What matters is a correct, timely response. We work out exactly what it means and handle the reply, end to end.

The problem

Why NRIs get notices — and why they escalate

Most NRI notices aren't accusations — they're the system flagging a gap. The usual triggers: a TDS mismatch between your return and your 26AS/AIS, a high-value transaction that's auto-reported (a property sale, a large deposit or remittance), not filing when you were actually required to, or a return that doesn't line up with your 15CA/15CB on a repatriation.

The danger isn't the notice — it's ignoring it or replying badly. Miss the deadline and the department can proceed on a best-judgment assessment, add penalties and interest, or hold your refund. A measured, evidence-backed reply, filed on time, is what closes it cleanly.

Key things to know

Tax notices — the essentials

What the notice is really telling you, and why the response matters more than the panic.

The section number tells you a lot

143(1) is usually a routine intimation; 139(9) means a defective return to fix; 143(2) is scrutiny; 148 is reassessment (income said to have escaped assessment); 245 adjusts a refund against past dues. Each needs a different response — and a different urgency.

Deadlines are strict

Most notices carry a firm response window. Miss it and the department can assess on its own terms, add penalties, or hold your refund. Speed is part of the answer.

It's often a mismatch, not a mistake

A large share of NRI notices come from a gap between your return and your 26AS/AIS — a TDS entry, a reported transaction, a property sale. Reconciling the data usually resolves it.

Property & repatriation flags are common

Selling property (TDS on the sale) or moving large sums out gets reported automatically. If your return doesn't match, a query follows. We connect the dots — and can fix the root cause via your return.

Don't reply in a panic

A rushed or wrong reply can make things worse. A calm, evidence-backed response — filed on time — is what closes a notice for good.

Questions

Tax notice questions, answered

I've received an income-tax notice as an NRI. What should I do?
Don't ignore it — note the section and the deadline, then send it to us. We'll tell you what it means, how serious it is, and handle a correct, on-time response. Most notices are resolved with the right documents and a well-drafted reply.
What do the different notice sections mean?
Broadly: 143(1) is a routine intimation (often just a computation); 139(9) flags a defective return to correct; 143(2) is a scrutiny notice; 148 is reassessment; 245 adjusts a refund against past dues. Each has its own process and deadline.
Why did I get a notice if I don't live in India?
Residency doesn't exempt you. Common triggers are a TDS mismatch in your 26AS/AIS, a reported high-value transaction (a property sale or large deposit), not filing when required, or a remittance flag. We identify the exact cause.
What happens if I ignore it or miss the deadline?
The department can make a best-judgment assessment, levy penalties and interest, or hold your refund — and it gets harder to unwind later. Responding correctly and on time is far cheaper than fixing it afterwards.
Can you handle an older or already-escalated notice?
Yes — we deal with reassessment (148) and scrutiny matters too. The approach changes, but the principle is the same: understand exactly what's asked, assemble the evidence, respond properly. Send it over and we'll assess it.
